Mellow Mushroom is one of the few pizza chains that publishes a per-item flag for exactly the thing this page is about. Its nutrition data carries an “Animal Products” column, item by item, with three states: contains, does not contain, and not published.
Answer: per Mellow Mushroom’s own current data, there is no finished dish on the menu that it flags as free of animal products — no specialty pizza, no calzone, no hoagie, no Munchie and no dessert. What exists is a set of components it does flag clean: the crusts, the vegetables, the dairy-free cheese, two salad dressings, two breads, the tempeh and the red sauce. Mellow separately says it can make any of its vegetarian pizzas fully plant-based. Both halves of that are true and neither should be read without the other.
About this source
Mellow Mushroom hosts no allergen document of its own — mellowmushroom.com/nutrition/ returns a 404, as do its allergen paths, and there is no PDF referenced anywhere on its site. Its own footer navigation sends “Nutrition” off-site to a Nutritionix portal that Mellow Mushroom designates as its nutrition destination, where the data is Mellow’s own. That is what this page is built on: brand-supplied data on a third-party platform the brand points you to.
The grid states “Last Updated: 04/28/2026”, and the underlying dataset’s own server headers and filename both independently date it to 28 April 2026. All figures below were read on 31 July 2026 directly from the machine-readable dataset behind the portal — 601 item records — rather than from a printed grid, so item names cannot become detached from their marks.
How to Read Mellow’s Flag
Three things about this flag matter before any of the item lists make sense.
1. It has three states, not two. Across the 601 records, 362 are marked as containing animal products, 237 as not containing them, and 2 as not published. A “does not contain” is a positive statement by Mellow. A “not published” is not a statement at all. They must not be collapsed into each other.
2. Mellow publishes no meat flag whatsoever. The dataset has a Meat column, and it reads “not published” on all 601 records. Nothing is marked as containing meat, and nothing is marked as free of it. Never read an empty meat column here as evidence of anything — Animal Products is the only animal-derived flag Mellow actually populates.
3. It is a nutrition-platform allergen-style flag, not a vegan certification. Mellow publishes no definition of what it counts as an animal product in that column. It clearly captures dairy, egg and honey — honey sriracha sauce is flagged — but we attribute it as what it is: “items Mellow Mushroom’s own nutrition tool flags as not containing animal products”.
Separately, Mellow’s own plant-based page defines its vegan icon this way, verbatim: “Vegan — This icon indicates a menu item is prepared without animal products and is safe for Vegans.”
The Three Pizzas This Page Used to Recommend
Veg Out, Great White and Kosmic Karma are all flagged as containing animal products, in every size Mellow publishes — Large Slice, Medium Slice, Small Slice and Gluten Free Slice. All twelve rows carry a “1” in the Animal Products column and a “1” for Milk. The rendered grid says it in words, with a tooltip on each individual cell that names its own item: “Warning! Veg Out Pizza, Large Slice Contains Animal Products.”
The same is true of every other specialty pizza in Mellow’s data, including the plain Cheese pizza, Holy Shiitake Pie, Pacific Rim and House Special.
What that flag does and does not mean. All three co-flag Milk, which is consistent with the default, as-published build using dairy cheese. Mellow’s own plant-based page says it “can make any of our vegetarian pizzas fully plant-based” and that you can substitute Follow Your Heart® Dairy-Free Cheese for regular cheese on any pizza. The Animal Products flag describes what the pizza ships as, not what a substituted build would be — and Mellow publishes no post-substitution status for any pizza. So the honest position is: as listed, these are not vegan; substituted, Mellow says it can make them plant-based but does not publish data for the result. Mellow also publishes no per-item ingredient statements, so which animal ingredient triggers each pizza’s flag cannot be determined beyond the co-flagged milk.
What Mellow Flags as Free of Animal Products
These are components, and that framing matters — most of them are things you would build with, not order.
- Cheese substitute: Follow Your Heart® Dairy-Free Cheese, in all slice sizes including the gluten-free slice.
- Crusts and breads: Baked Pizza Crust and Baked Pizza Thin Crust in all three sizes, Gluten Free Crust, French Bread, Multi Grain Bread, Multigrain Ciabatta.
- Tempeh: flagged as not containing animal products, in the standalone record and in the large, medium, small slice and calzone portions. Mellow also flags it as containing soy and gluten.
- Mellow Red Sauce: flagged as not containing animal products, across all slice sizes and the calzone and gluten-free slice portions.
- Oils and seasoning: Olive Oil, Black Truffle Oil, Italian Seasoning.
- Salad bases: Romaine, Salad Mix, Spinach, Spring Mix.
- Salad dressings — only two: Balsamic Vinaigrette and Oil & Vinegar. The other six on the menu, including Caesar, Ranch, Greek Feta, Creamy Asian, Esperanza and Bleu Cheese, are all flagged as containing animal products.
- Salads — only one: the Asian Crunch Salad. It is the only salad on the menu Mellow flags clean, and it is not mentioned anywhere in the old version of this article. Its dressing is not identified in the data, so ask which one it ships with.
- Vegetables and fruit: Artichoke Hearts, Avocado, Banana Peppers, Black Olives, Candied Pecans, Caramelized Onions, Cucumbers, Dried Cherries, Fresh Basil, Garlic, Garlic Roasted Red Peppers, Green Olives, Green Peppers, Iceberg Lettuce, Jalapeno Peppers, Kalamata Olives, Mushrooms, Onions, Pepperoncini, Pineapple, Portobello Mushrooms, Roasted Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, Spinach, and Kids Apple Slices.
- Wing sauces and rubs: BBQ, Hot, Jerk, Lemon Pepper Dry and Thai.
One vegetable is the exception. Roasted Mushroom Trio is flagged as containing animal products — the only vegetable topping on the menu that is. Croutons and Toast Points are flagged the same way.
The wing-sauce trap. Those five sauces sit under a section header that reads “Nutrition is for sauce or rub only.” The wings themselves — bone-in and boneless, in every count — are flagged as containing animal products. A clean sauce on a chicken wing is not a clean item.
Where Mellow Contradicts Itself
Mellow’s plant-based page says, verbatim: “Eating vegan? Mellow Mushroom serves vegan-friendly pretzels, salad dressings, sauces, Munchies, and specialty pizzas.” Its own allergen data does not support most of that list, and we are publishing the contradiction rather than picking a side.
- Pretzels. Every pretzel item in Mellow’s data is flagged as containing animal products — including “Pretzel Bites Without Beer Cheese”, plus Pretzel, Butter and Salt, both beer-cheese versions and both catering trays. The marketing page says vegan-friendly pretzels; the allergen tool says otherwise. Until Mellow resolves that, the safe reading is the per-item data: do not order the pretzels as vegan.
- Munchies. Every single one is flagged as containing animal products — Bruschetta, Cheese Bread, all four Mellow Rollz, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Toast Points, the pretzels and the wings.
- Specialty pizzas. As above — every one is flagged.
- Salad dressings and sauces. Partly supported: two dressings and five wing sauces are flagged clean, the rest are not.
- Tempeh. Supported. It is in Mellow’s data and flagged as not containing animal products.
There is a second, less obvious trap here. Mellow’s published grid shows about 379 item rows and has no Sauces and no Meats section at all — so searching that grid for “tempeh” or “red sauce” returns “No Results Found”, and a reader could easily conclude Mellow publishes nothing about them. Both are in the underlying record set with a clean flag. The grid you can see is a presentation layer, not the data.
What Mellow Publishes Nothing About
Tofu and hummus do not appear anywhere in Mellow Mushroom’s nutrition data. The words occur zero times across all 601 records. That is not evidence they are not served — it means Mellow publishes no allergen or animal-product data for them at all, so nothing about them can be confirmed either way. If a location offers them, that is a question for the restaurant.
Mellow also publishes no vegan-specific cross-contact statement. Its nutrition portal carries a general disclaimer and its food philosophy page discusses gluten cross-contamination, but nothing addresses animal products specifically. Each Mellow Mushroom is independently owned and the menu varies by location; the data above is the chain-level set.
Corrections We Made to This Page
Nearly every headline recommendation in the old version of this article is contradicted by Mellow’s own data. Listing the errors rather than deleting them:
- “Vegan Pizza Options: Veg-Out Vegan Pizza / Plain Vegan Cheese Pizza / Pacific Rim / Great White / Build-Your-Own.” Four of five removed. Veg Out, Great White, Pacific Rim and Cheese are all flagged as containing animal products in every size. There is no “Plain Vegan Cheese Pizza” item.
- “The trendy Vegan Veg Out stone-baked pizza is prepared with Follow Your Heart vegan cheese.” Removed. Veg Out is flagged as containing animal products and co-flagged for milk. The dairy-free cheese is a substitution you have to request, not what the pizza ships with.
- “Substitute ham or bacon on the Pacific Rim with vegan tempeh or tofu” and “replace the four cheeses on the Great White.” Removed. Mellow publishes no post-substitution status for any pizza, and tofu is not in its data at all.
- The build-your-own topping list. Mostly correct and kept in substance, with three corrections: chives and tofu do not exist in Mellow’s data, and “teriyaki tempeh” is not a listed item — plain Tempeh is, and it is flagged clean. The list also omitted several items that are flagged clean, which are now included above, and never warned that Roasted Mushroom Trio is flagged as containing animal products.
- “Vegan Calzone Options: Veg-Calzone / Build-Your-Own Calzone… the dip or sauce is also made to be vegan.” Removed. Mellow lists exactly two calzones — Build Your Own Calzone and Steak and Cheese — and both are flagged as containing animal products. There is no “Veg-Calzone”.
- “Vegan Hoagie: Tofu Hoagie / Tempeh Hoagie.” Removed. Neither exists. Mellow’s eleven hoagie records — Avocado, California Club, Chicken & Cheese, Italian, Meatball, Steak and Cheese, in half and whole — are all flagged as containing animal products, including the Avocado Hoagie. The breads are the only part of that section that survives, and they are flagged clean.
- “Vegan Sides & Snacks: Hummus with Pita / Pretzels With Mustard And Pizza Sauce / Hummus with Carrots & Celery / Brochette.” All four removed. Hummus appears nowhere in Mellow’s data. Every pretzel item is flagged as containing animal products. “Brochette” appears to mean Bruschetta, which is also flagged.
- “Made out of fabulous Mellow dough and kosher salt, these vegan pretzels are served with traditional yellow mustard.” Removed. No ingredient statement is published for the pretzel, no yellow mustard item exists in the data, and the pretzel is flagged as containing animal products.
- “Vegan Salad Options: Chef Salad / Greek Salad / Enlightened Spinach Salad / Italian Herb Vinaigrette / House Salad / Balsamic Vinaigrette.” Five of six removed. Mellow’s salads are Apple Harvest, Caesar Supreme, House Salad, Keep It Greek, Mellow Cobb and Asian Crunch — and only Asian Crunch is flagged clean. Greek and House salads are flagged as containing animal products. There is no Chef Salad and no à-la-carte Enlightened Spinach Salad, and no “Italian Herb Vinaigrette Dressing” exists. Only Balsamic Vinaigrette in that list was right.
- The Greek-salad and Enlightened-salad ingredient lists. Deleted rather than adjusted. Mellow’s nutrition tool publishes no composition text for any item, so those lists had no source.
- “Vegan Sweets & Desserts: Strawberry Mango Frozen Popsicle / Pink Lemonade Frozen Popsicle… apart from these, Mellow Mushroom doesn’t have any baked desserts.” Wrong twice, removed. No popsicle appears in Mellow’s data, and Mellow does have baked desserts — brownies, three cookies and sundae builds — all of them flagged as containing animal products. The correct statement is that Mellow has desserts and none of them is flagged clean.
- “An all-new vegan Favorites Menu with delicacies made using daiya non-dairy vegan cheese… starting in February 2021… more than 170 restaurants.” Removed. Mellow’s current dairy-free cheese is Follow Your Heart®, named on two of its own pages; Daiya appears nowhere on the site, and no “Vegan Favorites Menu” exists today. The outbound link to the cheese manufacturer’s site has gone with it — this page now cites Mellow Mushroom’s own data only.
- “Operates in over 21 states”, “the latest Naked Ritz Burger”, and a quotation attributed to a Mellow Mushroom executive. All removed as unsourceable — no state count appears on the site, the only burger in Mellow’s data is “Mel’s All American Smashburger” (flagged as containing animal products), and the quotation could not be located anywhere on mellowmushroom.com.
- “Arguably the most diverse and delicious vegan choice range in the whole pizza industry” and “almost as vegan-friendly as entirely vegan-based outlets.” Removed. Per Mellow’s own data there is no vegan finished dish on the menu bar one salad.
- A paragraph of “in 2025” filler about Mellow’s fifty years and dietary accommodation has been deleted.
- Cross-contact was never mentioned, and the absence of any vegan-specific statement from Mellow has now been noted.
One claim from the old page survives intact and is worth keeping: the crusts are fine. Baked Pizza Crust, Baked Pizza Thin Crust and Gluten Free Crust are all flagged as not containing animal products.
To Sum Up
Mellow Mushroom gives you good raw material and an unusually specific flag to check it against. What it does not give you is a finished vegan dish it will stand behind: on its own current data, every specialty pizza, every calzone, every hoagie, every Munchie and every dessert is flagged as containing animal products in its default build.
The realistic order is a build — a clean crust, the vegetables, the Mellow Red Sauce, the tempeh and the Follow Your Heart cheese, or the Asian Crunch Salad with balsamic or oil and vinegar. Mellow says it can make any vegetarian pizza fully plant-based. It just does not publish data for the pizza once it has.
