Newk’s Eatery is a fast-casual café chain built on soups, salads, sandwiches and pizzas. If you eat plant-based, the honest picture at Newk’s is much narrower than this page used to claim.
Answer: Newk’s has no vegan dish, and far fewer workable options than we previously said. Newk’s publishes allergen flags — not ingredient lists and not a vegan designation — and by those flags every sandwich, wrap, pizza, mac & cheese and soup on the menu declares milk. What clears milk, egg, fish and shellfish is a short list of sides: fruit, apple sauce, pasta salad, three chips and three dressings.
This page was rewritten on 31 July 2026 against Newk’s own published data. The previous version recommended seven things that Newk’s flags as containing milk, or that no longer exist. Those corrections are listed at the end.
Where Newk’s Data Actually Lives — and What It Is Not
Newk’s own domain publishes no allergen grid at all. The “Nutrition” link in the footer of newks.com points to a Newk’s-branded portal at nutritionix.com/newks-eatery/portal, stamped Last Updated: 02/11/2026. That portal is the source for everything below (fetched 31 July 2026). Newk’s names MenuTrinfo® as the compiler.
The “V” on Newk’s Menu Means Vegetarian, Not Vegan
This matters more than anything else on the page. Newk’s menu carries a small “V” badge, and its own legend calls it Vegetarian-Friendly. The image file is literally named ico-v.svg and is registered in Newk’s own site configuration under badges: {vegetarian: …}. A V-marked item at Newk’s is a vegetarian item. Several of them declare milk. Do not read that badge as a vegan mark — the previous version of this page effectively did.
Flags Are Not Ingredients
Newk’s publishes whether an item contains one of nine tracked allergens. It does not publish what is in anything. Nothing below is “vegan”; it is “Newk’s declares no milk, egg, fish or shellfish.” Honey, gelatine, stock, lard and anchovy are not tracked at all.
The clearest demonstration is on Newk’s own dressing list: Honey Mustard Dressing passes a milk-free filter. It obviously contains honey. A clean allergen row is not a vegan verdict, at Newk’s or anywhere else.
Newk’s Own Cross-Contact Warning
Quoted verbatim from the portal, and absent from the previous version of this article:
“Our menu items may contain the following allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans. Although efforts are made to avoid cross-contact of allergens, Newk’s Eatery does not guarantee that cross-contact with allergens will not occur. Before placing your order, please inform your server if you or anyone in your party has a food allergy.”
“All ingredient statements were found on manufacturer-generated spec sheets. It is possible that formulations may change or an ingredient or vendor substitution might be made which may not be immediately reflected in this chart.”
What Clears Milk, Egg, Fish and Shellfish at Newk’s
Filtered on all four allergens at once, Newk’s entire menu returns fourteen items. Two of them are chicken by name. The other twelve are the honest answer to this question:

- Trio side choices: Fresh Fruit · Pasta Salad
- House-made dressings: Balsamic Vinaigrette · Greek Dressing · Sherry Viniagrette (Newk’s spelling)
Pasta Salad is worth naming on its own. It is the only substantial item on the whole menu that clears all four, and the previous version of this page never mentioned it. It still is not “vegan” — Newk’s publishes no ingredients for it — but it is the most useful thing on the list.
Watch this one: Potato Salad clears milk but not egg. It is easy to confuse with Pasta Salad. They are different items with different flags.
There Is No Vegan Soup at Newk’s
The previous version of this page devoted a whole section to a Grilled Vegetable Soup, described as “both vegetarian and vegan friendly.” No such soup exists.
The complete current soups section on newks.com is: Bowl of Soup Pairing, Broccoli Cheddar Soup, Lobster & Crab Bisque, Tomato Basil, Loaded Potato, Chicken Tortilla. The nutrition portal lists Tomato Basil, Chicken Tortilla, Pepperjack and Crawfish, Lobster Bisque and Loaded Potato. Neither list contains a grilled vegetable soup.
And filtering the portal to exclude milk returns zero soups. Filtering the other way — items that do contain milk — returns all fifteen soup rows (five soups × cup, bowl, jumbo), each carrying the ! mark whose key reads “Item DOES CONTAIN the allergen.” Newk’s own descriptions agree: Broccoli Cheddar is “seasoned with grated cheddar cheese… garnished with Cheddar cheese”; Loaded Potato is “a creamy chowder of potatoes, chives, bacon, sour cream, and melted cheese”; Tomato Basil is “a creamy, slow-simmered soup.”
A note on Newk’s two sources: Broccoli Cheddar Soup is live on newks.com but absent from the nutrition portal Newk’s itself links to. The two are out of sync, and the portal is the older of the two.
Salads, Sandwiches and Pizzas — What the Flags Say
The previous version presented several of these as vegan after customisation. Here is what Newk’s actually flags:
- Garden Salad — declares milk
- Greek Salad — declares milk
- Portabella Veggie Sandwich (the item previously called “Veggie Club” here) — declares milk
- Portabella Veggie Pizza — declares milk; all nine pizzas declare milk
- Kid’s Toasted Grilled Cheese Sandwich — declares milk
- Every one of the 15 sandwiches, 13 half sandwiches, 5 wraps and 4 mac & cheeses — declares milk
You can of course ask for a salad without cheese and croutons. But Newk’s publishes flags for items as listed, not as modified, so whether removing the cheese removes the declared milk is not knowable from Newk’s. The precise question to ask staff is: is the milk in the cheese and croutons, or in the dressing and preparation? Newk’s does not say.
Two things the previous version stated as fact simply are not published anywhere by Newk’s: the 11-grain bread and the cauliflower pizza crust. Newk’s publishes no bread rows, no crust rows, no sauce rows and no topping rows. There is nothing to check either claim against. A “ginger wasabi dressing” does not exist either; the current dressings are Balsamic Vinaigrette, Bleu Cheese, Caesar, Greek, Honey Mustard, Lemon Basil Vinaigrette, Ranch and Sherry Viniagrette.
Chips — One of the Four We Recommended Was Wrong
The previous version listed Newk’s Jalapeno Kettle Chips first. Newk’s flags that item milk. So do the Mesquite BBQ Kettle Chips, the Cheetos and the Nacho Cheese Doritos.
The chips that clear milk, egg, fish and shellfish are Newk’s Original Kettle Chips, Lay’s Baked Potato Chips and Multigrain Sun Chips — and Newk’s publishes exactly one Baked Lay’s row, not the five flavours the old list named.
Beverages: Newk’s Publishes Nothing
The previous version said “All the beverages at Newk’s are vegan.” That cannot be confirmed or denied. Newk’s lists 20 beverages plus 19 Little Newk’s beverages, and none of them appears in the allergen dataset at all — not flagged clean, simply absent. Newk’s publishes nutrition for its drinks and no allergen or ingredient data. (The Little Newk’s list does include Kids Whole Milk.)
Desserts
Nine desserts, none of which clears milk. The Big Crispy and the Peanut Butter Crispy are egg-free but declare milk; the rest fail both. The previous version’s conclusion here was right — it just could not show its working. Now it can.
Corrections to the Previous Version of This Page
We correct errors on the page rather than deleting them quietly. Removed or replaced:
- “Whether it’s a pizza or a sandwich you’re looking for, you will find at least one vegan option in each category.” False by Newk’s own data. Every sandwich, wrap, pizza, mac & cheese and soup declares milk.
- Garden Salad and Greek Salad presented as vegan options. Both declare milk.
- Grilled Vegetable Soup. Does not exist, and no soup at Newk’s is milk-free.
- “Veggie Club.” The item is now the Portabella Veggie Sandwich, and it declares milk.
- “The 11-grain bread that Newk’s uses… is vegan” and “the cauliflower pizza crust is gluten and oil-free while being very vegan-friendly.” Neither is published by Newk’s in any form. The second claim was then repeated later in the same article as established fact.
- “Ginger wasabi dressing.” Not on the menu.
- Newk’s Jalapeno Kettle Chips recommended. Declares milk.
- “All the beverages at Newk’s are vegan.” Unverifiable — Newk’s publishes no allergen data for beverages.
- “Newk’s Kettle-Batch soups… with soup selections that change daily.” Newk’s publishes a fixed list of soups and no rotation statement.
- The cross-contact warning was missing entirely. It is now quoted above, in Newk’s own words.
- The company-history section — the 2004 founding, the named family members, the 2013 rename, the 100th restaurant at Lake Charles and the tagline — was not verifiable from any Newk’s source we obtained, and has been removed rather than left standing unsourced.
- A “Benefits of Being Vegan” block citing PETA UK has been removed. It was third-party filler with no Newk’s content, and carried a spliced, now-stale “in 2025” line.
Summing Up
Newk’s doesn’t have a vegan dish, and the customisation route is weaker than it looks, because the underlying items are flagged for milk and Newk’s publishes nothing about modified versions.
What you can order with the flags on your side: fresh fruit, apple sauce, pasta salad, Original Kettle Chips, Baked Lay’s or Sun Chips, and a balsamic, Greek or sherry vinaigrette. That is a side plate, not a meal — but it is an honest one, and it is what Newk’s own data supports.
