Vegan Options at IHOP

IHOP is unusual among breakfast chains in that it publishes an actual Vegetarian and Vegan Menu Guide, with its own written definition of what it means by vegan and a section-by-section list. That makes this page short and specific.

Answer: IHOP’s current guide marks exactly eight items vegan, and every one of them is a side. Every other section of the menu — pancakes, crepes, waffles, French toast, omelettes, benedicts, biscuits, burgers, apps and salads, entrées, the 55+ menu, desserts and the kids’ menu — reads “No options available at this time.”

About this source — please read it

The document this page is built on is IHOP’s own PDF, at IHOP’s own URL: ihop.com/-/media/ihop/files/ihop-vegan-and-vegetarian-guide.pdf. Its footer states, verbatim, “This information is applicable as of 3/30/2026.”

We could not fetch it from IHOP’s live server. IHOP’s site returns a Cloudflare block to every route we tried, including a plain request, two different European servers, IHOP’s asset paths, a challenge solver and a US-based fetch — the US attempt also returned 403, so this is a general bot/firewall block rather than purely a country block. We therefore read the document from an archived capture of IHOP’s own URL, taken on 18 May 2026, and verified it two ways: coordinate-aware text extraction and a page-by-page read of rendered images of the PDF, which agreed exactly.

What that means for you: the content below is IHOP’s, and the document self-dates 30 March 2026. We could not confirm against IHOP’s live server that this is still the file being served today. IHOP revises these guides roughly twice a year, so a newer edition may exist. Treat this as the current published edition, read from an archive, and check with the restaurant.

IHOP’s Own Definition of Vegan

From the red header of the Vegan Menu Guide, verbatim:

“IHOP defines vegan as a menu item that does not contain beef, poultry, pork, seafood, dairy, eggs, and honey. dairy, eggs, and honey. In addition, IHOP’s vegan menu items do not contain animal sourced gelatin, flavors, colors, or enzymes. Because we have multiple sources of animal products in our shared cooking and prep areas, including common fryer oil, we are unable to guarantee that any menu item be completely free of animal products. Limited time offers, regional items, test items, or temporary substitutions may not be included.”

The repeated “dairy, eggs, and honey.” is a typo in IHOP’s original document, not ours — we have left it in rather than tidy it and present a cleaned-up sentence as a quotation.

Note what that definition covers: honey, gelatin, animal-sourced flavours, colours and enzymes are all excluded, which is stricter than an allergen table. Note also what it does not promise — IHOP explicitly says it cannot guarantee any item is free of animal products, because of shared prep areas and common fryer oil.

IHOP’s separate vegetarian definition is not the same thing: “IHOP defines vegetarian as a menu item that may contain dairy, eggs, and honey but does not contain beef, poultry, pork, or seafood.” IHOP’s vegetarian list is long. It is not a vegan list, and items from it should not be treated as one.

The Eight Vegan Items

All eight are in the Sides section. The modifications in brackets are IHOP’s own, printed in its guide — they are requirements, not suggestions.

  • Crispy Breakfast Potatoes
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Hash Browns
  • Multi-grain toastno butter or jam. IHOP excludes the jam as well as the butter.
  • French Fries — IHOP’s own “common fryer oil” caveat applies to this one and to the hash browns.
  • Steamed Fresh Broccolino garlic butter
  • Side Saladno cheese, no dressing
  • Sauteed Spinach

The only other vegan-relevant line anywhere in the guide is a single tip beside the Omelettes section: “Use the Build Your Own veggies to create loaded Hash Browns.”

Availability varies. IHOP’s own guide says “Limited time offers, regional items, test items, or temporary substitutions may not be included”, and individual location menus do not always list all eight. Read the list as “these are the eight IHOP’s guide names”, not “these are on every menu”.

What Changed Between Editions

Two things are worth knowing because they are still repeated all over the internet:

  • Plant-Based Sausage Patties is no longer on IHOP’s vegan list. It appeared under vegan Sides in the edition dated 31 March 2025 and is absent from the current 30 March 2026 edition. It is the item most “vegan at IHOP” articles lead with, and it is the only substantive change between the two editions. If you have read elsewhere that IHOP has a vegan sausage, that is now out of date against IHOP’s own guide.
  • “Rice Medley is vegan” was a tips-column line in the 2025 edition and is gone in 2026.
  • Vegan salads were a 2022 thing. The 2022 edition marked two items under Apps & Salads. The current guide’s Apps & Soups & Salads section reads “No options available at this time”, and a Side Salad appears only under Sides.

Cross-Contact and the Fryer

IHOP states this twice, in two separate documents, and it was missing from this page entirely before:

“Because we have multiple sources of animal products in our shared cooking and prep areas, including common fryer oil, we are unable to guarantee that any menu item be completely free of animal products.”

That applies most directly to the two fried items on the list — Hash Browns and French Fries.

Beverages

IHOP’s guides cover food only. No beverage appears on either the vegan or the vegetarian list, so IHOP publishes no vegan status for any drink. We are naming that gap rather than filling it with a list.

The Kids’ Menu

IHOP’s vegan guide says “No options available at this time” for the Kids Menu. Worth knowing before you sit down with a plant-based child.

Corrections We Made to This Page

This article previously recommended twelve items, and six of them are not on IHOP’s vegan list at all — several are not on IHOP’s menu at all. Rather than delete those quietly:

  • “IHOP has a vegan salad… you can also opt for the vegan Citrus Pecan Salad.” Corrected and removed. The Side Salad is vegan only “no cheese, no dressing” — the old page omitted both. Citrus Pecan Salad appears on neither guide and on no current menu. “Big House Salad” likewise does not exist.
  • “Vegan dressings at IHOP include orange vinaigrette, fat-free raspberry vinaigrette, creamy Italian, and Catalina or French dressing.” Removed. IHOP’s guide qualifies the Side Salad as vegan only with no dressing. Not one dressing is listed as vegan.
  • “Minestrone Soup… IHOP has a vegan option.” Removed. Apps & Soups & Salads reads “No options available at this time” on the vegan guide, and minestrone is not on IHOP’s menu at all — the soup IHOP lists, on the vegetarian guide only, is Tomato Basil Soup.
  • “English Muffin… get the muffin loaded with jams.” Removed. IHOP lists it as “Buttered English Muffin” and it is on neither guide. The only vegan bread is multi-grain toast, and IHOP explicitly excludes jam — exactly what the old page told readers to add.
  • “Order any fresh oatmeal… ask it to be cooked in water” and the grits recommendation. Removed. Grits are on IHOP’s vegetarian list, not its vegan one, and oatmeal is not on IHOP’s menu.
  • “Hashbrowns… if you ask the server to get yours cooked without butter.” The butter caveat was invented. IHOP attaches no modification to Hash Browns, unlike the broccoli, toast and side salad, where it does. The salsa/ketchup/avocado toppings were also unsupported — IHOP’s own tips column describes its fire-roasted poblano salsa as vegetarian, which is not the same thing.
  • “Sourdough Toast.” Removed. Not on IHOP’s vegan list and not on the menu; the current menu lists “Buttered Toast”.
  • “Sauteed Veggies… a platter of spinach, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, onions and mushrooms.” Removed. No such platter exists. Sauteed Spinach and Steamed Fresh Broccoli (no garlic butter) are separately listed, and IHOP’s own tip is narrower: build-your-own veggies on hash browns.
  • “Vegan sauce and topping options include tortillas, salsa, blueberry compote, strawberry glaze, chocolate sauce, and peanut butter.” Removed, and this was the most dangerous passage on the page. IHOP lists no vegan sauce, syrup, compote, glaze or topping of any kind. Six items were asserted vegan with no brand support.
  • “Seasoned Fries” — corrected to French Fries, which is what IHOP lists. No seasoned-fries item and no fry seasoning is published.
  • “Baked Potato.” Removed. It is not on IHOP’s current menu or on either guide.
  • The whole beverage list — flavoured coffee, herbal tea, iced teas, fountain drinks, lemonades, splashers, cranberry, grapefruit and tomato juice, “selected alcoholic beverages” — removed. IHOP publishes no vegan status for any drink, and several of those items are not on its menu.
  • “Most of the vegan options you have at any 1,900 locations.” Removed. No location count was obtainable from IHOP.
  • The entire “Future of Vegan Food at IHOP” section — built on a Vegan Outreach Instagram post, a petition signature count and a claim that “IHOP plans to introduce vegan pancakes” — has been removed. None of it came from IHOP, and IHOP’s own current guide says of pancakes, crepes, waffles and French toast: “No options available at this time.” The closing promise that “soon enough, you will be able to enjoy vegan pancakes at IHOP” went with it. The outbound links to third-party vegan menu round-ups and campaign pages have been removed for the same reason: this page now cites IHOP only.
  • A paragraph of “in 2025” filler about IHOP’s commitment to evolving customer preferences has been deleted. It asserted nothing checkable.
  • Cross-contact was never mentioned. IHOP’s shared-prep-area and common-fryer statement has been added, verbatim.

One thing the old page got right and we have kept: IHOP does not serve vegan pancakes, and IHOP says so itself.

Wrapping Up

IHOP publishes more than most breakfast chains, and what it publishes is honest about its own limits: eight vegan items, all sides, three of them needing a specific instruction to your server, and an explicit statement that shared fryers mean nothing can be guaranteed. That is the whole of it. Anything else you have seen recommended at IHOP as vegan — pancakes, dressings, soup, sauces, plant-based sausage — is not on IHOP’s current list.
